Weekend Getaway - Part I

Our family trekked up north with our Chicago friends for a little R&R this weekend. We were a bit in the lead going up to our meeting point, so we took our time driving the scenic route and stopping as we went. This led us to two interesting places: Point Beach and Manitowoc.

First, we stopped at the nuclear plant to visit their new visitors center complete with a mini hands-on museum. I felt like Marge Simpson dragging my kids to see the pretty nuclear plant.

"Look children! See how pretty the cooling towers look next to the lake? Beautiful!"

L even found the neutron button. Cool.

Next we ventured into Manitowoc (well, we had no choice, the road led us right into downtown). Our jaws dropped at the sight of a five story tall Budweiser beer bottle. This is WISCONSIN. You can't even buy Bud south where we live. Miller only, of course. The bartenders will even ignore you should you order one in Milwaukee. And here we were only one hour north. And so the people of Manitowoc, obviously supported by the large bottling plant on Main Street, choose to brush away the rivalry in order to get a paycheck and some health insurance.

Tomorrow, we visit Door County and learn that the large waves will not allow our ferry to take us to the island where we are staying. Stay tuned.
